Don't lose your cool. Arthur McKay can take the heat out of refrigerant legislation.
HCFC-22 (also known as R-22) has been the refrigerant of choice for air-conditioning systems for more than four decades. Unfortunately for the environment, releases of R-22 such as those from leaks contribute to ozone depletion.
R-22 is a greenhouse gas and the manufacture of R-22 results in a by-product (HFC-23) which contributes significantly to global warming. Consequently, as of the 1st Jan 2010, the manufacture of R-22 has completely ceased and it is now illegal to use Virgin HCFC’s.
What does this mean for servicing existing air-conditioning units?
Existing units using R-22 can continue to be serviced with R-22 provided any replacement gas required is supplied from a recycled source but only until December 2014.
The use of recycled R-22 will completely cease on 31st December 2014 and, due to limited availability, the cost is increasing rapidly for the recycled gas. Ultimately, this is leading to both unplanned downtime and aggressive price rises.
There is no EPA requirement to change or convert R-22 units for use with a non-ozone-depleting substitute refrigerant. Such changes, called "retrofits," are allowed if the alternative has been found acceptable for that type of use.
R-404a or R134a is permitted for retrofits but R-410A is not recommended in retrofits due to its higher working pressures.
