Arthur McKay was extremely proud to win the competitive tender to complete the Mechanical, Electrical and Networks fit-out for such an important, pioneering new venture. Built by GRAHAM Construction, it is designed to support entrepreneurial start-up businesses, especially those dealing with “big data” (large-scale computer processing) and space technologies to create new market opportunities for the science and technology sector.
The building is sited at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and run by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. The new centre helps cement the long-established collaboration between the STFC and the University, keeping Edinburgh at the forefront of developments in astrophysics, particle physics, engineering and industry.
The Arthur McKay team installed all the M&E building support services, spanning the four-storey building, covering basement, ground, 1st & 2nd floors, installing, testing and commissioning of all mechanical, electrical and network services. In addition, Arthur McKay’s in-house Data Cabling team designed and installed a flood-wired Structured Cabling System to meet Cat 6a specifications and all current protocols, for delivery of data, video, voice and wireless connectivity.
The Arthur McKay team operated, from start to finish, with the due diligence you would expect from one of the UK’s biggest and best building services contractors. In practice, adopting a partnership working approach, developing excellent working relationships with the main contractor, GRAHAM Construction and the Blackwood Partnership, who were the M&E consultant responsible for the design of services (although Arthur McKay had Contractor’s Design Portions for the fire alarm, lightning protection and Building Management Systems).
The team’s knowledge and experience helped deliver the project on time, on budget and with no snagging works whatsoever! Here at Arthur McKay, we’re proud of our involvement in such an important capital investment project and wish the Higgs Centre for Innovation every success for the future development of the science, engineering and technology sectors, world-wide.
“The team from Arthur McKay is knowledgeable, hard-working and team spirited – which all bodes well for running a successful, high-profile construction project. It’s always a positive experience working with them.”
