Arthur McKay was delighted to be appointed by the main contractor, Morgan Sindall, on behalf of development partner hub West Scotland to install the mechanical, electrical and data services for this new public healthcare facility. Orchard View provides mental health services for adults and older people, with a particular focus on delivering care in a dementia-friendly environment.
In the design phase, the project architects sought input from the Scottish Dementia Development Centre, setting up focus groups with patients, staff and carers to ensure that the finished design incorporated the latest principles in dementia-friendly research. This dedication and care to the building design was carried through the construction phase by all contractors, ensuring that the finished care home provides modern, in-patient accommodation, which will continue to meet the needs of service users and staff for years to come.
PROJECT SCOPE
Arthur McKay carried out all the mechanical, electrical, public health and data works to fit-out this new healthcare facility, including connection of incoming utility services. Facilities include multi-purpose social spaces for patients, families and carers, including a café, a hairdressing salon and treatment rooms. Our procurement team also played a key role in this project, sourcing all the sanitaryware, including the supply of specialist mobility hygiene equipment to make bathing accessible for all patients.
SUSTAINABILITY
We were also responsible for the design and installation of a 22kW array of solar PV panels, helping the NHS towards achieving national sustainability targets set by government.
KEY CHALLENGE
Mental health and dementia are top priorities for the NHS and this pioneering new build development makes fundamental changes to the way patient care is delivered. This project was part of a wider project for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, involving the introduction of community-based mental health services, so it was absolutely imperative that the building was handed over on the pre-agreed handover date, so that plans to transfer existing patients to the new facility could be implemented.
“Orchard View is the first healthcare project we have worked on with Arthur McKay. I was impressed that, despite this being a new working relationship for us both, they were able to meet the public health authority compliance and sign off process to complete to the agreed handover date. The experience of their team was invaluable to ensure that the project remained on target and we met our commitment to the end client.”
