Let's take a few details.

St Anne’s and St Catherine’s Primary Schools

Renfrewshire Council is continually working towards its goal of becoming one of Scotland’s highest-performing education authorities. To that end, the council has invested significantly in both new build schools and infrastructure improvements to their existing estate.

In recent years, Arthur McKay has been selected by Renfrewshire Council to undertake millions of pounds worth of electrical upgrade works to their school estate; awarded on a project by project basis by open tender.

PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR

Being contracted directly to the local authority, Arthur McKay was the Principal Contractor and, as such, was responsible for the Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan, ensuring that the construction sites were secure at all times and works were carried out without incident.

SCOPE OF WORKS

The project scope was to complete an electrical update to bring the two primary schools up to current standards and improve ongoing energy efficiency. This included renewal of all the main panel and distribution boards, electrical rewiring, new energy efficient lighting, upgrading the fire alarm system, installation of data outlets, new CCTV system, induction loops and builder’s work (alterations to roller shutters, civils work, hand rails, flooring and new suspended ceilings).

KEY CHALLENGE

Both schools required the electrical upgrade works to be carried out within a tight 6-week programme in order to complete construction works whilst the schools were in recess for the summer holidays.

EXPERIENCED SELF-DELIVERY TEAM

This is where Arthur McKay’s experienced self-delivery team really paid dividends, having worked on similar electrical rewiring projects within other schools in Renfrewshire Council’s estate. Operationally, the team needed to mobilise quickly to take advantage of the window of opportunity presented by the summer recess. Arthur McKay’s dedicated Project Manager monitored the works closely against the planned delivery programme, so that staff and students could return to their refurbished schools for the start of the new term.

“Running projects with Arthur McKay is always a positive experience. They have a highly-skilled team, who are proactive and go the ‘extra mile’ to make sure they deliver to our expectations – on time and on budget – which is crucial, especially with works to our school property estate.”

Stuart Mossie, Engineering Team Manager, Renfrewshire Council
